I
was born in San Francisco, California and continue to live in
the bay area today. As a child I was extremely shy, so my mother
put me in dance classes to improve my social skills. Once I had
a taste of the stage no one has ever accused me of being shy again.
As a child I took tap, jazz and ballet. During high school I extended
my love of the stage to theatre and I graduated from Mills High
School with the Bank of America award for drama.
After high school, I
attended the University of San Francisco where I continued to pursue
my passion for the stage by taking theatre, ballet and hula classes.
In addition, I started to pursue some television opportunities and
was cast in several commercials along with some print work. I loved
performing and I am always looking for new ways to be in the spotlight.
During
my last year at the university, I became engaged to my high school
sweetheart. After getting engaged, I decided to start working out
in order to lose a few pounds for my upcoming wedding. This was
how my love for the fitness lifestyle began. I started out doing
solely aerobics and steps class. However, the more time I spent
in the gym the more I began to notice the women lifting weights
in the weight room. These women re-defined my concept of beauty.
These women were strong and healthy with gorgeous muscles and definitions.
I was sold. I started to lift weights along with my cardio sessions
and quickly saw some great results. I had found a new passion and
I was hooked.
My husband Greg and
I spent the next couple of years getting settled into family life.
In 1998 I graduated Cum Laude with a degree in English Literature
and went to work at a biotech company. My passion for fitness continued
and I went on to get my aerobics instructor certification - teaching
spin classes during my lunch hour.
Three
years after getting married, I'm working out in the morning before
going to the hospital to give birth to our beautiful little girl.
After our daughter was born my husband and I started our own business.
This has allowed me to work from home and spend more time with our
daughter, which has truly been one of the greatest joys in my life.
After my daughter was
about a year old, I felt the need to get back on the stage. A friend
of mine at the gym had competed in Fitness competitions before and
she let me watch some of her old tapes. I immediately knew this
was something I would love to do. I found out about some local competitions
and started to train for my first show - Ms. Fitness Sacramento.
I ended up winning the show, and more importantly finding a new
love. Competing in fitness was great because it incorporated several
of my passions in one - performing, dance and fitness.
My
second show was the Fitness America Nationals 2001 and that was
a real eye opener. Seeing the level of talent at this show I decided
to start taking gymnastics in order to improve my routine. Learning
gymnastics at my age has been extremely challenging and rewarding.
It's such a great feeling when your are able to work hard and accomplish
something that once seemed impossible. One of the greatest joys
that I get from competing in fitness is rising to new challenges
and pushing past my own limitations and boundaries.
Most
recently, I competed at the 2003 Fitness America Nationals where
I made my goal of breaking that top 10! Now I am training even harder
and hope to improve my placing at the Fitness Universe in June.
Competing in Fitness has taught me a lot about myself and I will
always be grateful for the sport.
